Le 11 avril 2025, j’ai eu le plaisir de participer, en tant que conférencier, au symposium de recherche Celebrating Latin American and Caribbean Studies in Montreal, organisé conjointement par le Collectif Latin American Studies Hosted by Students and Scholars in Action (CLASHSA) et le Réseau d’études latino-américaines de Montréal (RELAM) à l’Université McGill.

Cet événement a rassemblé des professeur·e·s, des étudiant·e·s aux cycles supérieurs et de premier cycle issu·e·s de diverses universités montréalaises, autour de thématiques portant sur l’Amérique latine et les Caraïbes. Il a constitué un espace de dialogue interdisciplinaire d’une grande richesse, propice à des échanges stimulants sur les objets, les méthodes et les finalités de nos recherches.

J’y ai présenté une communication intitulée :
« The subject of the object: When, Why, and How do we research Latin America and the Caribbean in Canada? »
Cette intervention proposait une réflexion critique sur les conditions de production des savoirs sur l’Amérique latine et les Caraïbes depuis le Canada. J’y aborde notamment la question de la positionnalité du chercheur, les enjeux épistémologiques et politiques du travail de terrain, ainsi que les tensions entre attentes institutionnelles et responsabilités éthiques.

Au-delà de ma présentation, cette journée m’a offert l’occasion d’échanger avec des collègues engagé·e·s dans des projets passionnants et variés, enrichissant ainsi mes propres réflexions sur le rôle de la recherche dans la construction — ou la remise en question — des récits sur les Suds.

Participation in the Celebrating Latin American and Caribbean Studies in Montreal – Research Symposium 2025

On April 11, 2025, I had the pleasure of participating as a speaker in the Celebrating Latin American and Caribbean Studies in Montreal research symposium, co-hosted by the Collectif Latin American Studies Hosted by Students and Scholars in Action (CLASHSA) and the Réseau d’études latino-américaines de Montréal (RELAM) at McGill University.

This event brought together professors, graduate students, and undergraduates from various Montreal institutions to discuss key issues in Latin American and Caribbean studies. It provided an enriching interdisciplinary space for exchanging ideas on our research topics, methods, and critical approaches.

I presented a talk entitled:
« The subject of the object: When, Why, and How do we research Latin America and the Caribbean in Canada? »
In this presentation, I offered a critical reflection on how knowledge about Latin America and the Caribbean is produced from the Canadian context. I explored issues of positionality, the epistemological and political dimensions of fieldwork, and the tensions between institutional expectations and ethical commitments.

Beyond my own contribution, the event was an invaluable opportunity to engage with fellow scholars working on diverse and inspiring projects — a moment that will continue to inform my research moving forward.
